eMondrian consists of an open-source core and commercial modules. Both ship in the Community download; the modules are unlocked by a license key.
What’s free and what needs a key
| Part | What it gives you | License | Key |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core engine | Semantic model, XMLA, MDX, caching, Excel, OLAP Client, Schema Editor, Catalog Editor | Open source | Not needed |
| DAX module | Power BI live connection | Commercial | Evaluation or commercial key |
| MCP module | AI agents over MCP | Commercial | Evaluation or commercial key |
Excel and MDX never need a key — also not when a key expires.

Keys
- Evaluation key — free, 30 days, DAX and MCP. See Evaluation key.
- Commercial key — issued with a commercial license, valid for the subscription period. Activated the same way as the evaluation key.
A key is a signed license file listing the customer, the license type, start and expiry dates and the modules it unlocks. eMondrian checks the key when a DAX or MCP request arrives; plain MDX over XMLA never checks it.
Source code
